About This Item
This copy of the first edition of The San Diego Union (Vol. I - No. 1) was published by J. N. Briseno on October 10, 1868. The paper was to be a weekly that would be published every Saturday morning. This issue consisted of four pages, measuring approximately 15 x 23 inches. An editorial column on page 2, titled Salutatory, presents the Editor's purpose and hopes for this new publication. The paper's contents included news articles, stories and anecdotes, poetry, humor, descriptions of local areas and interests, and lots of advertisements.
The San Diego Union, after many years or ownership changes, mergers, etc. is today published as The San Diego Union-Tribune.
The paper is tanned, but the text is clear and easily read. The paper has been folded in quarters, resulting in tears along the fold lines and a very small hole at the intersection of the fold lines. There are also occasional small tears or staining at some corners of the pages. Because primarily of the tears along the fold line, the overal condition of the paper is poor.
The photos accompanying this description show each of the paper's four pages.
