New York: The Century Company, 1905. . 12mo, slate green cloth; front pictorial, printed in orange, red, white and black; small ink-stain on the fore-edge of the front cover Alice Caldwell Hegan Rice (1870Ð1942). was the daughter of a successful art dealer, she was born in , Shelbyville, Kentucky in 1870. At age 16 she began serving as an aide at a mission Sunday school in a Louisville slum known as the Cabbage Patch. During this time she met the woman on whom she based the heroine of her first and most sucessful book "Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch". In addition to Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch, Rice wrote many other novels noted for pathos and humor. Her autobiography, The Inky Way, appeared in 1940. Rice died on Feb. 10, 1942, in Louisville. In 1910, with Louise Marshall, Rice founded the Cabbage Patch Settlement House in Louisville, which grew to include a paid staff and more than 100 volunteers
