Spine a little frayed at head and tail, also cloth a little faded/discoloured. Front board almost completely separated at hinge though still totally intact at spine cver. Front free endpaper now just loosely inserted. Rear end papers missing and final two pages of book (index) are coming losse. Occasional slight corner creasing to pages. Clean and unmarked internally. All edge gilt still bright and clean. Many illustrations. A fascinating trip down the River Saone full of period details.

Yellow ochre cloth boards with gold embossing and illustration, [xix] 367 pp -- gold-edged, 148 BW illustrations. A travelogue through this river in eastern France, beautifully illustrated by Joseph Pennell, with a few drawings by the author, and conveying the flavor of travelling through in that area in the latter 1800s. The author and illustrator voyaged along the whole of that river which was then navigable.
