About This Item

Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 1955. Book. Illus. by A.W. Davey. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). First Edition.. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Published in commemoration of Saskatchewan's Golden Jubilee. A Governor General Award-winning author provides "an authoritative and exciting history of a province from the earliest days to the booming present." This copy warmly inscribed (on half-title) by Wright to Dorothy McCurry, the former Dorothy Lampman Jenkins, who was Canada's figure-skating champion in 1922 and 1923, and who married Harry Orr McCurry (assistant director of the National Gallery of Canada from 1919 to 1939, and director from 1939 to 1955). The family vacationed at Kingsmere, Quebec. Inscription reads: "July 9, (followed by the inked-out, apparently incorrect year, which is then rewritten) 1965/For Dorothy McCurry--/at Kingsmere--with/special reference to/the blacksmith shop on/page 101, and always/with good thoughts/Jim W./P.S. This book was/done on contract for/the 'Saskatchewan Jubilee/Committee'. Under the/circumstances it could have been worse?/J." On page 101, Wright has drawn a quick vertical line in the bottom third of the left margin to mark the passage he mentions. This copy contains the scarce errata slip correcting seven errors in the text. Red cloth w/jubilee device in gilt/green/red to bottom right corner of front cover, gilt lettering bordered in green on spine, 292 pages (including selected bibliographical references, index). Moderate general wear, in moderately rubbed dust jacket w/a bit of chipping, short edge tears, impressions, general wear. Additionally, someone (presumably Dorothy McCurry) has written in small letters at the bottom of the rear flap, "Page [in pencil] 56 [in ink], Page 115 74 [in ink], and 130 131 141 146" [in pencil]. Presumably these notations refer to pages on which Mrs. McCurry found items of particular interest..
