London: George Newnes, July to December 1930. [Literary Magazine] THE PASSING OF CONAN DOYLE. Octavo (24 x 17cm), pp.viii; 700. With frequent black and white, and occasional dichromatic, illustrations. Publisher's cyan cloth with gilt titles to spines and black titles and decoration to uppers. All edges lightly tinted blue. A nice crisp, clean copy internally with a little light toning to endpapers. Moderate wear and marking to covers, with some light sunning and wrinkling to spine. Very good. Originally published in June 1891, 'A Scandal in Bohemia' was the first Sherlock Holmes short story; the first Holmes story to appear in The Strand Magazine, and the first to feature illustrations by Sidney Paget. It was also the only story to appear in the Strand Magazine TWICE. Such was the importance of this story and its character that the unprecedented decision was made to was reprint it (September 1930) out of gratitude and respect following the death of Arthur Conan Doyle, an event marked also by an article by the Editor of the magazine. Also three further stories by Conan Doyle, and numerous short pieces by various authors, including P.G. Wodehouse and Winston S. Churchill.
