Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1951. First US edition, first printing of The Scarlet Sword by H.E. Bates, published by Little, Brown and Company, Boston, in 1951. This is a near fine copy, signed by the author on the front free end paper in blue ink, with slight fading and pushing to the foot of the spine, pushing to the upper edge of front board and staining to upper corner, likewise to rear panel upper corner and with staining to the lower edge, the internals with ghosting to the front paste down, front free end paper and rear paste down, the text blocks with minor browning and mild spotting. The unclipped wrapper with chipping and browning to the front and rear knuckle folds and head and foot of the spine, with browning to the upper edge of rear panel and rear flap. Wrapper designed by Denver L. Gillen.
