About This Item

Edinburgh: Printed by James Ballantyne, 1803. FIRST EDITION, 12mo, pp. [iv], 184 + frontispiece. Contemporary half red morocco, marbled boards, spine divided by gilt rules, second compartment lettered direct in gilt, other compartments tooled centrally in gilt. A little spotting, some offsetting to title-page. Rubbed, some wear to extremities. A few underlinings and brief marginal notes, bookplate removed from pastedown. The first edition of Leyden’s poem ‘notable for combining nostalgia about Scotland's past with anxiety about its future’ (ODNB). It also contains some Arthurian elements - in the years prior to its publication Leyden had been assisting Walter Scott’s gathering of folklore for Scott’s Border Minstrelsy of 1802, contributing poems and other material, which may have influenced this work’s mythic bent.
