Beschreibung: Weichbroschur mit illustriertem Titel in Rotbraun (Wiederholung des Titelblatts auf Seite 4). Oktavband: 21,5 × 18,5 cm; pp. 105, [7]. Druck in Rotbraun und Schwarz. Titel, Überschriften und Initialen in "Lechter-Schrift", Text in Römischer Antiqua (Genzsch & Heyse). Gedruckt auf sandfarbenem Papier.

Zustand: Das (zu) dünne, plissierte Einbandpapier unbeschnitten, an den Rändern ausgefranst, leicht fleckig, der hintere äussere Falz am Fuss vom Rücken gelöst. Der Buchblock altersbedingt nachgebräunt.

Notizen: Der "Schatz der Armen" gilt gemeinhin als das erste, vollständig von Lechter gestaltete Buch. Diese Freiheit nutzte er weidlich aus, was sich am gewöhnungsbedürftigen Satzbild und den schlecht lesbaren Titelschriften zeigt. Selbstbewusst schrieb er dazu 1898 in einem Brief an Eugen Diedrichs: "Der Lesepöbel, der sicherlich die Schrift nicht lesen kann, wird das Buch auch nicht kaufen, dem wird der Inhalt des Werkes ebenso schleierhaft bleiben wie die Schrift. Ich denke Maeterlinck ist nur vornehmen Geistern zugänglich, und nur diese sollen zum 'Buch als Kunstwerk' erzogen werden." Lechters "Der Schatz der Armen" gilt als ein erster Höhepunkt seiner dekorativ-illustierenden Buchgestaltung.

First authorised German edition. Designed by Melchior Lechter as a "Gesamtkunstwerk" (total work of art). Description: Publisher's printed paper wrappers. Square octavo: 21.5 × 18.5 cm; pp. 105, [7]. Condition: The thin, pleated wrappers frayed at edges, slightly stained. Rear outer hinge at tail detached from the spine. Contents due to paper quality slightly uniformly browned.
