About This Item

Edinburgh: Robert Cadell, 1836. FIRST BRITISH EDITION. Later half-polished calf and marbled boards, spine in compartments with morocco labels; interior excellent. First British edition, published simultaneously in Philadelphia. Hall recounts his travels through Styria, a mountainous and forested state in southern Austria, and his visit to Schloss Hainfeld. In his very unique style, Hall provides an in-depth description of his travels and daily activities, from the Castle itself to the neighbors, other guests, and various events that occurred during his stay. His hostess was the Countess Purgstall, Caroline von Henikstein (1797-1844), the daughter of Austrian Jewish financier Joseph von Henikstein. A fascinating and readable book which truly takes the reader along with the writer on his wonderful adventures.

Hall (1788-1844), a British naval officer, was the author of several books describing his extensive travels, primarily in North America, Southeast Asia, and South America. Throughout his naval career, he captained numerous ships and explorations for scientific and diplomatic purposes.
