About This Item

London: Frank Cass and Co Limited, 1968. This work was first published in 1877 at a time when the English university scene was rapidly changing and the author, a fellow at Peterhouse, Cambridge, wrote in the preface that it was his endeavour "to collect in this volume some of the materials which are requiste for a faithful account of Cambridge and Oxford in the 18th century I have taken some pains to bring to light some of the secrets of university history and of literary lore which have lain dormant in manuscripts. A glance at the contents page shows how comprehensively he has described the universities of the 18th century. The first few chapters are devoted to the history and method of the old Cambridge test and examination for the first degree in arts and to the studying of mathematics, the predominant course, while the next chapter is concerned with the trivials of the old regime, grammar, logic and rhetoric. The subsidiary studies of the old tripos, classics and of moral philosophy, are next examined and followed in turn by a consideration of law as part of professional education; the development of the study of modern history at Oxford ; Oriental studies and a description of the elementary courses in a physicians education, physics, anatomy ,chemistry, mineralogy and botany. The question of special qualifications for the second degree in arts which was becoming accepted at Oxford though barely recognised at Cambridge is also discussed and the book ends with nine appendices which contain documents relating chiefly to old courses and schemes of study, methods of examination and disputations, honorary decrees, Cambridge University Calendars and the University Press. 435 pp including index This book is POSTED AT OUR STANDARD RATES FULLY INSURED (UK) ONLY . .Please email for further details.
