About This Item
Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Abrams, New York, no date [1969]; translated from the French by Stanley Baron; bound as 8vo but of course significantly larger, being 245 x 335mm; pp 216, all by 44 comprising the 350 plates which illustrate the work; bound in at the back is a 20pp fold-out catalogue of the prints and their attributions and loosely inserted is a small corrections slip referring to a page misnumbering; brick cloth, spine gilt, robust dust wrapper, all in extremely good, clean condition. The works deals with the activities of the first school of Fontainbleau, from approximately 1531 through to 1584. The changing group of artists were associated with the Château de Fontainbleau and François I but worked more widely in France, bringing Italian mannerism and thereby contributing to the development of Northern Mannerism and influencing the late Renaissance. Their work was a mixture of sophisticated and naive content and technique but brought in also a strong erotic and sensual tone. NOTE that as the volumne weighs approach 2.5kg there will be a carriage supplement needed for both domestic and overseas orders, the exact amount depending on the destination and the carriage used.
