Mock epic poem, a literary satire featuring Martinus Scriblerus, the character also used by Pope, Arbuthnot & Swift in their satires; replete with social criticism & literary in-jokes; the preface discusses the genre of epic poems. Seven copperplate illustrations + title page vignette, most engraved by Louis Peter Boitard after his drawings. First edition, printed for R. Dodsley in Pall-Mall and sold by M. Cooper in Pater-noster-row. Hardcover, as pictured; rebound in a remarkably unsympathetic lime-green leather with gilt & blindstamped decorations, marbled endsheets, possibly lithographed, likely from the 1920s or '30s. Shows some wear, smudges & nicks, some chipping to spine ends; ink name on title page, a few smudges & nicks to pages, boards a bit bowed. In six parts, plus preface & index, separately paginated: xvi; 31; 31; 31; 32; 32; 27; [8] pages; 7 engraved plates & illustrated title page. . First Edition. Full Calf. Good. Illus. by L. P.
