Edward Moxon, London., 1841. First U.K. edition. Small octavo. pp xii, 264. Five plates. Period binding of full calf with raised bands black leather spine label. The author of Two Years Before the Mast, the classic account of life as an ordinary seaman, here writes what became for at least a generation the standard reference for maritime law as applied to sailors. The American edition, published in the same year, has the title The Seaman's Friend.On the first blank is the ownership inscription, ''E. Simonot, sailor on board the English Bark the Mercury from London, April 1848''.Small ink inscription on front free endpaper. The plates show signs of damp which must have affected them before the book was bound up. Endpapers tanned at edges. Covers rubbed at edges and joints. Very good. Scarce.
