New York: Fifth Avenue Playhouse, 1939. First Edition. Octavo (21cm.); single sheet folded into 8-panelled pamphlet; illus. A bit soiled and toned, else About Very Good. Film festival held on the eve of World War II, providing a page-long introduction on "World Democracy and the Second International Film Festival," which begins: "Protect Democracy!" Among the films featured are Jean Renoir's "Grand Illusion," Sacha Guitry's "Pearls of the Crown" (described as the "Best thing to come out of France since the Statue of Liberty," according to Walter Winchell); "The Spanish Earth," with commentary and narration by Ernest Hemingway; Alfred Hitchcock's "The 39 Steps" and "The Lady Vanishes"; Michael Powell's "The Edge of the World"; and Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times." Also includes films from and documentaries on Czechoslovakia, Palestine, Egypt, Mexico, and China. The only films representing Germany and Italy are billed as pre-Hitler and pre-Mussolini. Unlocated in OCLC as of July, 2015.
