London: Cassell & Co 1948-1954, 1st edition. (Hardcover set) 640, 684, 818, 917, 673,716pp. Very good in good to very good dust jacket. Black cloth with patterned endpapers. Top edges stained red, maps, fold-out maps, appendices, indices. Tape-stains to the front endpapers of Vol.2, some tape damage to the inner gutter and back hinge of Vol.4, the top edges faded, the dust jackets have some tape repairs to the edges, and a few paint splotches on the spines. Synopsis
Dealing with war on a giant scale, THE GRAND ALLIANCE focuses on events as Britain, after fighting a desperate battle alone, was joined in the struggle against the enemy by Soviet Russia and the United Sates. Hitler's invasion of Russia brought to an end a period of almost exactly a year during which Britain and her Empire had stood alone. Six months later, the United States, attacked by Japan, joined the war and the Grand Alliance was born. It was a momentous turn in the course of the war and Sir Winston Churchill noted, 'United we could subdue everybody else in the world. Many disasters, immeasurable cost and tribulation lay ahead, but there was no more doubt about the end.'

There is no doubt that Winston Churchill was a great stylist, and if you can only read one history of World War II, you should probably read this one. On the other hand, although I don't know if there are any outright lies in this book, he does deem occasionally filter the truth to suit his political convenience.
