About This Item

New York: Viking Press, 1960. First American Edition. First Printing. Octavo. 22cm. Publisher's deep red cloth titled in gilt to spine with blind stamped decorations to front board. Dustjacket. 445pp. A clean, strong copy with very minimal wear to the cloth, in a bright pictorial dustjacket with some darkening and toning to the spine panel. A very good copy. Internally clean, illustrated throughout with black and white photographs. A study of the manuscripts found at Chenoboskion in the Nag Hammadi area of Egypt in the 1940's. Considerable scholarly effort has been directed at examining and translating the unearthed manuscripts, a quantity of which are of course not Gnostic in origin at all, but are commonly understood texts of the period (including an eccentric translation of sections of Plato's Republic). The discovery caused great excitement when first laid open to scholars, and indeed several of the texts are of importance and Jewish and Christian significance, but modern scholarship leans towards understating the "Gnostic" status of a lot of the material.
