The classic collection of photographs of night life in Paris during the 1930s by the French-Hungarian artist-photographer Gyula Halasz who used the pseudonymn Brassai as he visited and photographed the city's nightclubs, brothels and opium dens. It is also Brassai's memoir of an underworld that, a hundred years later, has been changed by wars, politics and technology to the point it no longer exists. First American edition, first printing. About 8 1/2 x 10 3/4 inches, unpaginated, with numerous full-page black & white photos. Includes a list of illustrations at back. Bound in plain black-paper-covered boards. The dustjacket's front panel contains a graphic featuring author and title in three different colors bordering a black & white photo of three nude women confronting a fully-clothed man and woman at the door of a building. This copy was once in a school library and contains a few library stampings and residue from a card envelope once glued to the front end page. The dj itself is glued to the book's boards. Book, boards and dj have been protected by a clear plastic dj protector that has done an excellent job of protecting the book and its photographs if you can ignore ignore the damage to the boards and the dj.
