About This Item

Roslyn, NY: Walter J. Black, Inc.. As New with No dust jacket as issued. 1969. First Edition. 1. Hard Cover. Hardcover without dust jacket (as issued). Publisher's full gray cloth, gilt lettering on red and black label on spine, gilt and red medallion on cover, tan endpapers. For this special Classics Club edition, a revealing story of Browning's life has been written by Pierre Loving. Loving contributes a highly readable account of Browning's life; the traits of Browning's personality, including his kindness, his earnestness, his sense of humor; an account of his courtship of Elizabeth Barrett; their happy years in Italy, and her tragic death. This brief biography is followed by a sound critical analysis of Browning's poetry, and his place in the stream of English poetry. You will also find three original facsimiles of Browning manuscripts in this volume: his first love-letter to Elizabeth Barrett; another to a friend, describing his philosophy of life and what he thought of his own poems; and the third, the manuscript of his last poem, Epilogue to Asolando, from the volume which was published on the day of his death. There is also a comprehensive glossary of unfamiliar names, words, and foreign phrases.. This is a new, unopened copy in perfect condition; unmarked, unread, tight, square, and clean. AS NEW.. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xxviii, 339 pp .
