About This Item

London: Journal of Horticulture & Cottage Gardener Office, 1866.

8vo. 215 x 140 pp. [8 ½ x 5 ½ inches].  vii, [47] pp. preliminaries and text pages.  Illustrated with 24 hand colored plates.  Bound in green calf spine and tips over marbled paper boards; author and title label on spine.

First edition.  Very attractive copy of this modest publication, illustrated with 24 nicely produced color plates.  Although assigned to Hogg & Johnson as editors, the Preface states that the text was written by Miss Margaret Plues.  "Any merit this work possesses is due to the pen of Miss Margaret Plues and to the pencil of Mr. W. G. Smith.  The former has furnished all the information o the economic use of the species, and the latter has made the original drawings, and transferred them to the stones.  The Preface to the study of the Fungi was also written by Miss Plues; and the manner in which both have executed their several parts of the work will doubtless meet with general approval."

For the variety Lactàrius Deliciòsus (Orange Milk Mushroom) Miss Plues quotes in part "Take sound young specimens; cut them into uniform size; place them in a pie-disk, with salt, pepper, and a little butter; tie a paper over the dish, and bake gently for three-quarters of an hour.  Serve them in the same hot dish, and you will have something better than stewed kidneys."   Very well illustrated with colored lithographs, highlighted with watercolor by W. G. Smith.
