About This Item

The First UK printing published by Oxford University Press, UK in 1976. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Just a hint of toning to the text-block. A neat contemporary owner's penned name and date to the upper blank end-paper. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition with only the very slightest of fading to the green colouring of the spine. Light toning to the flap upper edges. A very bright example of the Desmond Morris illustrated wrapper, and now protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been signed (without dedication) by the author to the title page. A copy of the ticket for the signing event accompanies this title as provenance. A very sharp copy of the author's ground breaking debut book. 'In July 2017, a poll to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 'Royal Society science book prize' listed 'The Selfish Gene' as the most influential science book of all time' (The Guardian 20/7/17). Increasingly scarce with such attributes. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

Synopsis

The Selfish Gene is a book on evolution by Richard Dawkins, published in 1976. It builds upon the principal theory of George C. Williams's first book Adaptation and Natural Selection. Dawkins coined the term "selfish gene" as a way of expressing the gene-centred view of evolution, which holds that evolution is best viewed as acting on genes and that selection at the level of organisms or populations almost never overrides selection based on genes.
