No dust jacket, this is John Gardner's first book, preceding his The Resurrection by four years, it is essentially a text book written while he was an English professor at Chico State College, Signed by Gardner, it includes John Steinbeck's The Chrysanthemums, pages 248-258, text from The Long Valley, Goldstone & Payne B124, not recorded by Morrow, also includes Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Edgar Allan Poe, Anton Chekhov, James Joyce, and others. Very good plus.

Brown and buff cloth half binding stamped with dark brown and gilt lettering, tan endpapers. Edition limited to three hundred, this copy numbered 197. Laid in are printed four-page brochure for the Lloyd Reynolds exhibit "A Life of Forms in Art" at the Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College, 2011, as well as a one-page prospectus for the exhibition catalog. During his last year the well-known Portland author, calligrapher and teacher wrote this history of the alphabet in the form of personal letters to his friend William Gunderson. Printed by John Laursen at Press-22. Preserved in a clear archival sleeve.

Los Angeles, CA: U. S. Engineer Office, 1946. Wraps. Good. Oblong folio. 37 black and white maps and charts showing sections of the propsed and existing sections of the highway through Guatemala to Panama. This is the plate volume only, no text. Printed paper wraps bound with rivets. The item has been folded once vertically with wear and loss to the covers. The maps have age toning but are mostly in very good condition, the vertical crease being more a bend on the maps than a crease. The size is 10 by 15 inches; some maps are larger and are folded at the right edges to fit. Only a good copy, but very scarce.

Allan Melville's Signature on a work of scrivener's art.Allan Melville was Herman Melville's brother, literary agent, and when this document was signed, adult roommate. Allan resided in New York with a law office at 10 Wall Street. In 1856, Herman still had several adventures to go before he too would be pulled into the world of documents and scriveners at the Custom House.. An interesting piece of Melvilliana. Fine.

First US edition. The first book published in Diana Wynne Jones' beloved Chrestomanci series. Cat doesn't mind living in the shadow of his sister, Gwendolen, the most promising young witch ever seen on Coven Street. But trouble starts brewing the moment the two orphans are summoned to live in Chrestomanci Castle. Frustrated that the witches of the castle refuse to acknowledge her talents, Gwendolen conjures up a scheme that could throw whole worlds out of whack by changing worlds with her doppleganger. Scared he'll be thrown out of the castle, Cat now has to find a way to pass off the unmagical doppleganger as his very magical sister!

Holyoke, Massachusetts: Whiting Paper Company, 1909. Water staining. Minor toning, dust soiling. A couple short tears to wrappers. Minor rust stains from staples.. A brief guide to letter writing etiquette and "the correct usage of fine stationary", advertising products sold by the Whiting Paper Company. It wastes no time establishing tone, and instruct the reader right away that "Papers of brilliant colors are not in good form. Bright reds, blues, yellows, etc., serve a purpose as window decorations but are not desirable for personal use" (p. [3]). It goes on to describe which colors, paper sizes, and qualities are preferable for different uses, in great detail; conventions for everything from visiting cards to monograms, regrets, and mourning cards. Of particular interest is a section instructing the reader how to address the President, the Governor, a Generals, or a Bishop (pp. 14-16), each with its own requirements and conventions.
