About This Item
A very scarce first edition poetry collection by Charles Darling. A volume of thirty-three poems published anonymously, many of which had been previously published in the 'St. James's Gazette'. Inscribed in pencil to pasteboard with bookseller notes on the author. Including that he presided over the Crippin and casement appeal 1910 & 1916.
Including 'In Praise of Idleness', 'A Poem of a Painted Plate', 'Hell and Tommy: A Tract', 'The Frenchman to the Hova', 'A New Regimen of Health', 'Ulysses on a Steamboat', 'Confessions of a Parliamentary Candidate', 'l'Esprit des Lois', and more.
Charles Darling, the 1st Baron Darling, was a High Court Judge and politician, who also contributed literary pieces to the 'Pall Mall Gazette' and the 'Saturday Review'. Darling was known for his brilliant but sometimes inappropriate wit, both on and off the bench, and for always being impeccably dressed. A few spots and marks to the boards and spine. Very light bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with some scattered spots to back endpapers.
