The soapy satirical novel that was first published serially in the Marin County independent weekly, the Pacific Sun, after the paper's editor, inspired by the San Francisco Chronicle's Tales of the City installments, approached McFadden (The writer would later befriend Armistead Maupin and commented that they 'divided up the turf at the Golden Gate Bridge'). McFadden eventually had to flee Marin after many of its residents reacted hostilely to her ruthless depiction of the excesses of its proto-yuppie culture. According to McFadden, this book, which features the seductive neorealist Tom Cervenak illustrations that accompanied the original weekly publication, 'was an overlarge paperback book format, which meant that people piled it up next to the cash register. It was modeled on the old Simon & Schuster puzzle books, which Bob [Gottlieb, editor at Knopf] had also published.' 111 pp.
