About This Item
Very Good. Lantern Slides. Set of 12 glass lantern slides with hand-colored images of various locations in Yellowstone National Park. Most have small red labels with location in pencil, a few have larger white labels, and four have visible titles in the negative. The only one with a date is "Excelsior Geyser 1889". Three with a title visible in the negative are credited to the photographer J. E. Stimson. The other nine do not have an identifiable photographer, but appear to be from the same person. All are in very good condition with no cracks. Joseph Elam Stimson (1870-1952) was born in Virginia and moved with his family to Nebraska in his teens. In 1886, he became a photographer's apprentice for his cousin in Appleton, Wisconsin. He moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1889 and purchased the photography studio of Karl Otto Eitner. Stimson spent the next six decades capturing images of the American West and earned a reputation for his landscape photography. The locations depicted in this set are as follows: Yellowstone Falls, Old Faithful, Cleopatra Terrace, Excelsior Geyser, a bridge over the Yellowstone River, the Upper Falls of the Yellowstone River, Jupiter Terrace, Castle Geyser, the Paint Pots, Golden Gate Canyon, the Upper Geyser Basin, and an unidentified geyser. A nice set with strikingly colorful images of some of Yellowstone's most iconic locales. ; Color Photographs .
