About This Item
New York: Funk & Wagnalls, 1970. First Edition, First Printing. Cloth. Near fine/very good. First edition of Setting the Course: The First Year, Major Policy Statements by President Richard Nixon, with a White House TLS and bookplate inscribed to the Hon. John D.J. Moore, United States Ambassador to Ireland.. Octavo, xix, 500pp. Blue cloth, title in gilt on spine. Solid text block, appears mostly unread. In the publisher's price clipped dust jacket, light chipping at top edge of spine, shelf wear, a very good example. White House bookplate hand-signed by President Richard Nixon affixed to the front free endpaper. Includes additional TLS on White House stationery signed by President Nixon. Both signatures with light finger smudge. An excellent association copy. Ambassador John D.J. Moore (1910-1988) was the longest serving American ambassador to Ireland in history, serving from 1969-1975. Moore famously accompanied Vice President Richard Nixon to South America in 1958 and the Soviet Union in 1959. Both trips produced international headlines, with Nixon's limousine being attacked in Caracas, Venezuela (May 13, 1958) and a conversation between Nixon and Nikita Khrushchev over the merits of capitalism being dubbed the Kitchen Debate (July 24, 1959).
