His army career spanned thirty turbulent years, from 1890 to 1920. He participated in the final Indian campaigns, the brutal conquest of the Moros on the Philippine Islands and the birth pangs of the American Labor Movement. As a corporal, Smith received the Congressional Medal of Honor for gallantry in action against the Sioux Indians.
