About This Item

New York, New York: The Claremont Printing Co., Inc, 1922. Very good. Some toning.. A set of five (5) sex education booklets published by the physician S. Dana Hubbard in 1922, with the aim of educating young Americans in sex, love, and marriage. Provides an important view into the sex education available to the general public in the 1920s, and interesting to see what advice has (or has not) held up over time. Note the inclusion of patriotic rhetoric, aligning sexual health and virtue with patriotic duty (e.g. "Help Your Country Produce a Healthy Strong People"). An open dialogue between parents and children regarding sex is advocated by the author. Some representative chapter titles from the booklets include: "Why Girls Are the Home Makers"; "Signs of Pregnancy"; "How Can a Person Avoid the Venereal Diseases?"; "The Working Girl"; "Automobile 'He-Vamps' and Taxi Driver White Slavers"; "How Vigorous Manhood is Achieved"; "Sex Hygiene, Self Abuse, Masturbation"; "The Un-Married Mother"; and "The Potential Prostitute". Also includes information about menopause, eugenics, infant care including breast feeding and bottle feeding, and how to avoid "whipping" children (i.e. spanking) in parenting. Prostitution, masturbation, and illegitimate birth are vilified throughout the publications. Advertises the early sex education films "Some Wild Oats" and "The Naked Truth".
