Publisher's dust jacket, near fine condition, $30.00 retail price on front flap, light wear from handling at top edge of spine, otherwise fine. Signed by Robert M. Gates on the title page. Robert M. Gates wrote From the Shadows in 1996, shortly after finishing his service as the director of the CIA. In 2002, he became president of Texas A&M University, but in 2006, President George W. Bush asked him to replace Donald Rumsfeld as the Secretary of Defense. In 2008, President-elect Barack Obama asked Gates to stay on as Secretary, making him the only Secretary of Defense to serve two presidents of different parties. He retired in 2011 after the successful raid on the compound of Osama Bin Laden.
