About This Item
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1949. Later printing of the original 1949 edition of Schaefer's archetypal first novel, of a quiet gunman trying to renounce violence, and a boy's hero-worship; a cornerstone of any Western fiction collection. Undated, but prior to 1954, when an illustrated (and reportedly slightly redacted) edition was issued, the year after the movie came out. Blue hardcover, brown titling. Shows light wear, minor bumping to spine ends; rubberstamped name & address on free endsheet, offsetting a bit to the front jacket flap; a few pages unopened - that is, untrimmed so they are still connected to adjacent pages - minor edge damage to the last few pages; the delicate jacket has a few rubbed patches, couple of short tears, minor chipping, flaps creased, $2.50 price intact. [8], 214 pages. . Later Printing. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 5½" by 7¾".
Synopsis
Shane, a stranger the Starretts take into their home in Wyoming in 1889, becomes involved in a feud between the cattle ranger and the local homesteaders.
