About This Item
New York.: Harper & Row.. 1996.. Black and white illustrations, 242pp, dustjacket lightly worn and faded on spine. Good hardback copy. Autobiographical account of life as a prisoner of war of the Japanese.
Langdon Gilkey was a young American teacher at Yenching University near Peking when he was rounded up with other foreigners and put them in an internment camp. For two and a half years these people from hugely varying backgrounds lived together.
How they coped under immense stress and shocking conditions "became a living laboratory, a world-in-miniature, that illustrated the human condition and man's moral problems in a way that would otherwise not have been possible, had more conventional conditions prevailed". (Dustjacket blurb). .
