About This Item
London: Chapman & Hall, 1856. First edition of his first novel. Meredith, known chiefly as a Victorian novelist and poet, is considered important in the evolution from Victorian to modernist novels, for his narrative technique and development of female characters. This appears to be the "B" variant in Carter's "More Binding Variants," which he notes "seem to be endless." Original morocco cloth with "Meredith's Shaving of Shagpat" on spine in gilt, and sides decorated only in blind (without lettering). Corners and spine ends show wear but spine lettering is very bright; altogether a very good, tight copy.
