This work, her second novel, also an award winner, is the story of Jane Turner, child of the 1950s, student in the '60s, daughter of well-to-do Baltimoreans, who, at 21, begins a cross-country search for freedom and adventure. At the end of a reckless, risky year on the road, Jane has been in love, in danger, in jail and, finally, in control of her own life.
