About This Item

大垣. [Ogaki].. Revised Edition.. Meiji 8 [1875].. 14 volumes of 20. The volumes included here are: Volumes I, II, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVII and XX. Frontispiece lithographic portrait of Iinuma Yokusai and striking black and white woodblock illustrations throughout a number with added handcolor, introduction to the second edition "revised and augmented" by the editor Tanaka Yoshio, yellow embossed wrappers soiled in places, 27 x 18 cm with title paper slips two a little worn but generally very good, Japanese four hole stab binding.

Bookplate of A. Chandler Manning (1874 - 1935) from a family of American landscape gardeners tipped-in to inside rear cover of each volume. Two pages of a handwritten English index to volume II, presumably in Manning's hand, loosely inserted in the rear of the second volume. Overall light soiling to covers, modern thread ties, occasional light spotting to plates but overall interiors are clean. An incomplete set of an important Japanese botanical work, filled with an extraordinary array of plants arranged according to their Linnean classification. Iinuma Yokusai (1783-1865) was a physician originally from Kameyama in Mie and praciced medicine in Ogaki. After his retirement, he dedicated himself to the botanical study. Iinuma's work on the herbaceous plants of Japan first appeared in twenty volumes published between 1856 and 1861, and was reprinted here in 1875 with Tanaka Yoshio as an editor. In this edition, Latin names were added to illustrations. The illustrations in this edition are printed mainly in black and white, but some details of floral structures have delicate watercolor touches added. .
