This is not the paperbound edition but the hardcover volume, the plasticized cover is illustrated in color with scene of a seashore and the notorious Union commandant of the prison, General Benjamin F. Butler. It is a fine copy inscribed by the authors on the front free end paper. "(name) Thank you for all your help. We hope you enjoy the book. Best wishes in all your endeavors Theresa Arnold-Scriber, Terry G. Scriber". Below the inscription is the full name of the recipient, in a separate hand, with "Researcher" written below. Used as a French base of operations and later by the British during the Battle of New Orleans, Ship Island served as a Federal prison under the command of Union Major-General Benjamin F. Butler during the Civil War. This volume traces the history of Ship Island which lies about 12 miles off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Rosters of all the Confederate soldiers and civilians imprisoned. Very useful for Civil War researchers and historians.
