In the Midwest during the 1970"s, as Walter McCloud was growing up, he hoped to become a dancer like Georges Balanchine, but soon realized he hadn't sufficient talent. While coping with his disappointment, Walter learns that his brother has cancer. The personal tragedy forces the McCloud family and Walter to deal with pain and loss, and well as hope and redemption via love from others.

Synopsis

Jane Hamilton lives, works, and writes in an orchard farmhouse in Wisconsin. Her short stories have appeared in Harper's magazine. Her first novel, The Book of Ruth, won the PEN/Ernest Hemingway Foundation Award for best first novel and was a selection of the Oprah Book Club. Her second novel,  A Map of the World, was an international bestseller. From the Hardcover edition.
