London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1871. J.A. Froude (1818-1894) was an English historian who is generally regarded as an apologist for British Imperialism. He was rather notoriously unsympathetic to the Irish. Still, he is a good writer, and these academic lectures can be enjoyed for that alone. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition, presented in a lovely Fine Binding. Marbled paper boards with calf leather tips and spine. The spine is highly deorated, with five raised bands, and filled with gilt. Clean text; 487 pages. Mildly bumped, and with typical rubbing at the margins, this remains an extremely attractive volume. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.. Half-Leather. Near Fine/No Jacket.
