SIBERIA AND THE EXILE SYSTEM. Kennan. George. The Century Co., New York. (1891). Two thick and heavy octavo-sized hardcover books; [xv + 409] + [x + 575] pages of text with numerous illustrations and maps. Very good conditions: no torn or missing pages; no writing or markings in the text; top page edges gilt, other page edges untrimmed and uncut; signature on front-free endpaper. Original hardcover bindings, with some wear, fraying to corners and fading to spines. A set of two solid and attractive books.
George Kennan's travels to Siberia resulted in his two first, and best, travel books: Tent Life in Siberia (1870) established his reputation as a travel writer; and his work, on the exile system, provided the most detailed exposé yet of the atrocities and injustice of the czarist method for punishing political prisoner Item.
