About This Item
Synopsis
James Gordon Farrell, known as J.G. Farrell, was a Liverpool-born novelist of Irish descent. This famous novel, The Siege of Krishnapur , won the Man Booker prize in 1973. It portrays the siege of Krishnapur, a fictional town in India which has been governed ruthlessly by The East India Company with little to no regard for the natives. The book details a besieged British garrison which held out for four months in the summer of 1857. The mutineers attack the residency, and the occupants of the Residency slowly succumb to bullets, cholera and various illnesses, starvation, and unproficient medical care. The survivors begin to lose hope, as their food supplies and ammunition dwindle. This well-researched novel is by turns both darkly humorous and horrifying.
