The child of Irish immigrant parents, Lawrence Barrett [1838-1891] was raised in Detroit and made his first stage appearance in that city in 1853. His New York City debut followed in 1856. In the second half of the 1800s, he became well-known as a theatre manager and actor, appearing in Boston, San Francisco, Kansas City, Missouri and several times in London where his Cardinal Richlieu in Edward Bulwer Lytton's drama was considered his best role. He worked frequently with fellow stage actor Edwin Booth, playing Othello to Booth's Iago and Cassius to his Brutus in "Julius Caesar". Barrett then contacted Booth and proposed that they tour together in the 1887 season. They worked together for the next several years and were immensely successful, both financially and in popularity with audiences. In 1889 and 1891 each actor was present when the other became seriously ill onstage and could not finish the performance. Booth survived until 1893 but Barrett died three days after the incident.
