About This Item
This renowned educator served as president of Harvard University for an astonishing forty years, from 1869 to 1909; among many other scholarly achievements, he edited the highly-acclaimed multi-volume "Harvard Classics" (1910). Bold full signature on a heavy stock 5" X 3" card, below which he pens "30 March 1922." Along top, in another hand, is penned "President Emeritus, Harvard University. Near fine. Minor mounting traces on verso. Comes with a fine First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", with single 3-cent "Charles W. Eliot" stamp at upper right and postally cancelled on 28 March 1940 with "First Day of Issue" so noted. Small decorative printed cachet at upper left notes this stamp comes from the USPS's "Famous Educators" series. Typed recipient/address neat bottom center. A superb example with appropriate philatelic accompaniment.
