New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1948. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine binding. Signed. Seven large 8vo. volumes; in the publisher's blue cloth bindings; there are no slipcases, nor does the Volume 7 have the dustjacket with which it was issued. There very faint dampstain to the top edge of the first pages of Volumes I and II; there are no other marks.~~Dr. Freeman died before completing the work; Volume VII was written by historian John Alexander Carroll and Dr. Freeman's secretary Mary Wells Ashworth. The massive biography was awarded the Pulitzer Prize posthumously to Dr. Freeman along with John Carroll and Mary Wells Ashworth; it is considered by many to be the definitive biography of Washington; all seven volumes are First Editions.~~While this set was NOT signed by Dr. Freeman, Volume 7 has a fantastic typed signed letter from Mary Wells Ashworth, typed on her personal stationery -- Apartment 400 | The Tuckahoe | Richmond. Virginia.~~The letter is heartfelt and fulsome: "You have paid us the highest possible compliment by reading Volume VII before writing to me. As for you letter of January 9, I shall treasure it always. While you to not catalogue yourself as a qualified critic, I think you are precisely that ..."~~. Near Fine binding.
