The author of this book was a physicist, chemist and a leader of the Soviet nuclear weapons program Nikolay Semyonov (1896-1986), who was awarded the 1956 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Sir Cyril Hinshelwood for their researches into the mechanism of chemical reactions. He became the first Russian Nobel laureate in Chemistry and remains the only Nobel Prize winner in chemistry in the motherland of Dmitri Mendeleev.
