About This Item

London and New York: Frederick Warne & Co., 1930. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. Green cloth boards stamped in black (featuring the publisher's Star Series design). No date, published circa 1930's. Some edge fading around head and foot of spine. Short gift inscription on ffep. Dust jacket edge chipped, particularly at foot of spine and top edge of front panel; price clipped. DJ in archival sleeve. 175, plus [8] pp. ads. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. This edition of Silver Lake was published by Frederick Warne & Co. as part of their Star Series. The Star Series were only issued from Warne's UK office. Based on the listed books on the rear panel of the dust jacket, this was probably published around 1936. The story is set in the wintry northern woods of America. A young brother and sister, Roy and Nellie, experience adventures in the wilderness, with encounters with Native Indians being prominent in the telling. Robert Michael Ballantyne (1825-1894) was a prolific Scottish author of juvenile fiction. Silver Lake was originally published in 1867. An earlier novel of Ballantyne's, The Coral Island, served as an inspiration for the notable writings of his fellow Scotsmen: Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island and J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan.
