About This Item
London: Macmillan Children's Books, 1985. Fine. 16 colour prints housed in the original illustrated cardboard folder (22.6 x 15.8cm), blue ribbon-ties to leading edges. Prints in excellent condition. Folder heavily rubbed, edgewear, extremities bruised. Fine/ good- Originally published in 1911 for a volume featuring both Alice' s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, "in 1979 the originals of these colour plates were discovered in Macmillan's archives and they are now reproduced again for the first time in over sixty years" (blurb). As of (re-)publication, a mystery remained: despite its inquiries, Macmillan could not discover who coloured the illustrations; whilst still painting in 1911, Tenniel's eyesight was very poor. The publisher invited readers to help.
