About This Item
First edition, First printing, Association Copy Inscribed: To Jake Seidenberg With every good wish for the years ahead from Dick Nixon
Book is in very good condition with a very good dust jacket with a number of tears and small pieces missing at top and bottom of spine. Small pieces missing on front at top near authors name (see pictures). Clean text. Unclipped ($5.95). Protected by Brodart book jacket cover.
(Note: Seidenberg served in the Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon and Ford Administrations. He served as the Executive Director of the President's Committee on Government Contracts, appointed by Eisenhower. Vice President Nixon was the Chairman of the Committee. Seidenberg later served as Chairman of he Federal Services Impasses Panel, which settled deadlocks in federal labor negotiations.)
Nixon's first book was the result of encouragement from President Kennedy-- who Nixon visited in The White House only months after Nixon was defeated by Kennedy in the 1960 election--and said that a book would raise the profile of any public figure. Kennedy's book Pulitzer Prize winning Profiles in Courage (1955) greatly improved his public image. Ultimately this book went a long way towards rehabilitating Nixon's image after his presidential election defeat of 1960.
Six Crises presents six significant moments in Nixon's political career: the Alger Hiss Case; his Checkers speech in 1952; President Eisenhower's heart attack in 1955; the attack on his motorcade in Caracas in 1958; the Kitchen Debate against Khrushchev in 1959; and his 1960 presidential campaign.
