Hardcover in navy blue cloth handsomely decorated and lettered in gilt. xvi+ 464 pp. Profusely illustrated with photographs of notable 19th and early 20th century stage performers both in portrait and in their roles. A tight, bright, fine example. John Ranken Towse (1845-1933) was theater critic for the New York Evening Post from 1874 to 1927. Here he provides his memoirs of decades in the New York City theater scene, from the period just after the Civil War through the eraly 20th century. He recalls, amoung others, Edwin Booth, Joseph Jefferson, Tommaso Salvini, Henry Irving, Ellen Terry, and many others.
