Original dark purple pebbled cloth with gilt spine title, blind-stamped boards; small octavo (5 x 7.5 inches); 247 pp Schaeffer spent 3 years in California, arriving in the summer of 1849 and the great majority of the book is devoted to California. He spent time in, and writes about, San Francisco, Stockton, Sacramento, Grass Valley, Downieville, and other gold rush towns. His account is considered both readable and reliable. Cowan says: "His narrations are exceedingly interesting." Cowan p. 570; Kurutz 558
