'Any persons obtaining this Card from me will be considered under promise not to show the card, or teach the rule to others. Three tables plus other calculating strategies, bordered in black. Unrecorded. Of Hicks, the following is known: assigned to General Robert E. Lees Army of Northern Virginia, Robert Hicks was present with the 34th Virginia Infantry for Lees surrender at the Appomattox Courthouse in April, 1865. Paroled out of service, Hicks returned to his home in the Lynchburg, Virginia area and resumed his life as a citizen. Robert Hicks married Frances Ann Morris in 1868 and had six children, four of which survived to adulthood. To support his family, he operated a tobacco farm and later became a business operator in Bedford County.
