About This Item

Boston: Jordan, Swift & Wiley, 1845. Hardcover. Good. Stated fifth edition. Two Volumes in one. 12mo. 123; 115pp. Original quarter calf and paper-covered boards. Lacks front flyleaf and half-title if so issued, calf spine and boards lightly worn, title page with half-inch chip in lower margin with no loss of text, and owner's early ink name on the title page. An early fictional account of a slave narrative; it was at first received by the anti-slavery public as a true relation of facts; but it was later identified by Richard Hildreth, the historian, as his own story of a purely fictional hero. An uncommon edition of an early slave novel. Uncommon in this 1845. *OCLC* locates only five holdings. *Wright* I #11892.
