More than one hundred ex-slaves describe what slavery was like--their masters, runaway slaves, work, the Civil War, and the coming of freedom. These narratives were collected by the WPA in the 1930s. Black and white photos of the narrators of these stories are scattered throughout the text. 143 pages with Notes, Bibliography, and Appendix (alphabetical listing of the narrators, with a sentence or two about each)..
